Dear Hiring Committee,

Thank you for the opportunity to apply for a teaching position in your district. After graduating from college with an English degree in 2004, I spent time working part-time in retail in order to spend more time with my children. As the last one entered full-time school, I felt free to pursue a Master’s degree in education and finish the journey I started so many years ago. This has led me to become a truly compassionate, confident teacher; one that might not have surfaced without this life experience.
My personal disposition as a teacher centers on inspiring students and developing their self-confidence. The environment I create in my classroom stems from my belief that all students are unique, worthy of respect, and capable of learning. My teaching philosophy is student-based; the environment and the relationships matter more than the content. In practice, my philosophy means calling on the student I know will be off-topic so I can redirect him and make it a learning moment for his own growth instead of ignoring him. My philosophy means asking students to work in small groups to master content knowledge, even when I know it may be louder and harder to manage. My philosophy means spending the necessary time to find breakthrough, exciting new methods that engage students and make learning content more relevant.
My classroom management philosophy has been developing for thirteen years; it began the year I had my first child. Raising kids has transformed me into a confident, natural teacher. The classroom has become an extension of my world as a parent. Diana Baumrind, a clinical psychologist, published four parenting styles based on the balance of two dimensions: “control, or enforcing demands for appropriate behavior, and nurturance, or supporting children’s individuality and agency.” I can use these same ideas in my classroom. Control is based on how I establish procedures, routines, and behavior expectations and how I consistently and fairly enforce them. As the year progresses, students will need less support from me to accomplish daily tasks, aiding their autonomy and ownership over their actions and choices. To balance this control, I will focus on relationally connecting to students. Nurturing students with positive talk and meaningful conversations creates a constructive learning environment and confident, engaged students. When students know I care and recognize them as individuals, they are more likely to buy into what I’m teaching as important. Furthermore, I will make the effort to understand the families and communities they come from and how this impacts their learning. Spending time in the community shows again that my students matter. Establishing a positive environment and nurturing relationships with my students will be the first step in meeting their diverse instructional needs.
I became a teacher to be a safe, encouraging person in students’ lives, while preparing them for adulthood through academic learning. I have determined the legacy I want to leave behind as a teacher. I will be the one who sees students as individuals, who teaches them about life and about English, who provides support even when no one else will, who encourages them to love themselves, who believes in their futures. I would love to begin this journey in your district.

Thank you for your consideration,
Danielle Anderson
